What is DBT Therapy?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that combines elements of acceptance and change. Although it was developed specifically for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), the good news is that you do not have to struggle with BPD to benefit from DBT therapy! DBT therapy is an evidence-based therapy for self-harm, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mood disorders. The goals of DBT therapy are to help you improve your ability to cope with emotions, connect with others more effectively and be more mindful.
The Skills You Learn:
One of the most important parts of DBT therapy is learning new skills. These skills are divided into four categories. They are mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Mindfulness. The first set of skills in DBT is focused on mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the here and now and fully engaged in the task at hand. It helps you to focus on the present moment and to let go of worries about the past or future, which can cause depression and anxiety. Mindfulness skills include techniques such as meditation, mindful breathing, and mindful observation.
Distress Tolerance. Distress tolerance skills help you to cope with difficult emotions and situations in a healthy way. These skills include techniques such as distraction, self-soothing, and radical acceptance.
Emotion Regulation. Emotion regulation skills help you identify and change negative thought patterns and beliefs that may be contributing to their emotional distress. These skills include techniques such as cognitive restructuring, problem-solving, and emotion regulation skills
Interpersonal Effectiveness. Interpersonal effectiveness skills help you build and maintain healthy relationships. These skills include techniques such as assertiveness, effective communication, and conflict resolution.
How Does DBT Work?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills training typically involves both individual and group therapy sessions. In both settings, you can learn and practice new skills. Some programs involve a phone coaching component, where a DBT therapist is available for support between sessions. At Embodied Wellness, PLLC we only offer individual DBT therapy online sessions. However, we can refer you to online group programs if you are interested!
