Interested in Finding Out if Online Therapy in Michigan Is Right for You?

Online therapy has become an increasingly popular option for people seeking mental health support. It offers the convenience of attending therapy from the comfort of your home, while still benefiting from professional guidance. If you're considering virtual therapy, it's important to understand how it works and what to expect. Below, we’ve answered some common questions about online therapy to help you make an informed decision about whether it’s the right choice for you.

  • Choosing a therapist online is a personal decision, and it’s important to find someone who meets your needs. Start by considering what kind of therapy you’re looking for—whether it's for anxiety, depression, trauma, or something else. Check the therapist's qualifications and experience to make sure they specialize in what you're seeking. At Embodied Wellness, we offer a free consultation, so you can ask about the therapists approach, experience, and availability. Make sure you feel comfortable with their style of communication and that they create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Sometimes it takes a few sessions to know if a therapist is a good fit!

  • While online therapy can be helpful for many people, it might not be the best option for everyone. If you're in a crisis situation, have severe mental health issues (such as active suicidal thoughts or psychosis), or need in-person support for safety reasons, face-to-face therapy may be more appropriate. Some people may also struggle with the technology aspect of online therapy if they don't feel comfortable using computers or video calls.

  • Online therapy sessions usually last between 45 minutes to an hour, similar to in-person therapy. The length of your session might depend on the therapist's approach and your needs. Some therapists offer shorter or longer sessions, so it’s a good idea to ask about the session length when you first reach out.

  • People choose online therapy for many reasons. It offers the convenience of attending therapy from home or anywhere you feel comfortable. For people with busy schedules, online therapy saves time by eliminating the need to travel to an office. It also provides access to therapists who may not be available in your area, making it easier to find someone with the right expertise. Additionally, online therapy can be a more private and less intimidating option for some individuals.

  • Research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many people. Studies have found that people who use online therapy experience improvements in mental health symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, similar to those who attend in-person sessions. The success of online therapy depends on factors like the therapist's experience, the commitment of the client, and how comfortable the client feels with the virtual format. For many, the flexibility and convenience make online therapy a highly effective option.

  • To get the most out of online therapy, treat it just like an in-person session! Make sure you are in a quiet, private space where you can focus without distractions. Be honest and open with your therapist about your feelings, concerns, and goals. If you're struggling with technology, let your therapist know so they can help. It’s also important to stay consistent with your sessions and try to apply the strategies discussed in therapy to your everyday life. The more you engage and commit to the process, the more you’ll get out of virtual therapy.

Benefits of Online Therapy in Detroit and Other Locations

When you live in Michigan, you know that subzero weather, snowstorms, construction, and potholes frequently prevent you from getting where you want to go. Public transportation is either nonexistent or very slow. It’s pretty much impossible to ride a bike in the winter. With these barriers, it can feel impossible to get into in-person counseling. Luckily, the weather will never get in the way of your online therapy session!

Below are other benefits of virtual therapy in Michigan:

  • You don’t have to spend money or time on transportation to therapy!

  • You don’t have to take extra time off of work or school to fit therapy into your life.

  • Increased comfortability during the therapy session (grab a blanket, sit on your favorite couch, wear sweatpants!)

  • Living far away from your therapist is no longer a barrier to effective treatment.

All therapists at Embodied Wellness, PLLC, are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan PPO plans (not Blue Care Network, Medicare, or Blue Cross Complete).
