Trauma Therapy & PTSD Treatment
In Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Throughout Michigan
“Being traumatized means continuing to organize your life as if the trauma were still going on—unchanged and immutable—as every new encounter or event is contaminated by the past.”
-Bessel Van Derk Kolk
You want to be free of your history of trauma.
Logically, you know that the past is in the past, but the pain still lives in your mind, body, and spirit. You feel like you should have it all together by now… doesn’t everyone else? You question what is wrong with you. All you want is to be normal yet you feel so broken.
The trauma feels trapped in your body.
You can’t control what other people will say or do. You never know who or what’s going to trigger you or how to feel safe in your body so you disconnect from it all. You feel like your body isn’t your own. When you get home after a long day, you feel like you’ve used up your bandwidth for people. You feel overly sensitive. You were taught to power through and not listen to your needs.
Common trauma and PTSD symptoms.
You don’t feel seen. You were taught that your needs do matter. You feel different and “othered.” You have been carrying the burden of trauma all on your own. The worst part of having experienced trauma is that even though you are physically away from it, it’s still living in your mind and body. You never found a space where you felt you truly belonged and struggled to trust your own instincts. The people who you were supposed to trust and go to for help, were also those who hurt you the most. As a result, you aren’t sure who is safe and who is not. The safest thing you’ve been doing is to assume that no one is safe which leaves you lonely and alone.
Additional symptoms of trauma may include:
Reliving aspects of the traumatic event (flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts or images)
Avoiding feelings or memories related to the traumatic event
Alertness or feeling on edge (hypervigilance, disturbed sleep, easily startled)
Negative beliefs or feelings (intense blame, overwhelming feelings of anger, guilt, or shame)
Trauma Therapy and PTSD Treatment in Michigan Can Help!
You are sick of feeling lonely, shameful, and always second-guessing yourself. Although there is a part of you that attempts to convince yourself that you are making it all up, you know deep down that what you experienced is real. You deserve to recover. You desire a rich, fulfilling life. You want to feel a sense of belonging. You want to believe that you matter and everyone else’s needs do not need to come before your own. You want to believe that you are deserving of love, nourishment, and safety.
Possibility and Hope Heal Trauma.
At Embodied Wellness, PLLC, we help survivors of trauma find an internal sense of safety and (re)connect with their bodies. You deserve a trauma therapist who will listen to you. Someone who understands your story, and hears your voice. We believe that to heal, you have to incorporate the body into the treatment process. There is no experience too big or too small to seek trauma therapy for. Together, we will challenge the belief that you don’t matter and that you are not enough. You will find your place of belonging in this world. During therapy, you can slowly let go of the guards you have been putting up for years without jeopardizing your sense of safety. It is possible to build trust in yourself after childhood trauma.
