Depression Treatment

in Detroit, Ann Arbor and all of Michigan

You wonder, “Do I even have depression?”

From the outside, it looks like you it “all together.” You hold down a job, have a loving family, good friends and supportive people around you. Yet on the inside, you are exhausted and have nothing left to give. Every day is a battle within yourself. Even though you may walk around with a smile on your face, on the inside you are hurting.

Common symptoms of depression.

You strive for perfection. You can’t help but be constantly critical of yourself. No matter how hard you try, you feel like you always fall short of your goals. You believe that you aren’t good enough or worthy. You doubt your every move. Everyday small tasks lead you to feel overwhelmed and flustered. You detach from painful emotions by staying in your head and actively shutting them off. You believe your worth and value are determined by your accomplishments.

Your depression feels all consuming.

You feel like you are barely holding it together. You tell yourself you should “just get over it” and you have no reason to feel down. Even when you have an accomplishment at work or school, it’s hard for you to celebrate your wins. There always seems to be something wrong. Sometimes you cry and feel hopeless for what seems like “no reason.” You’re convinced that you are “lazy” or “unmotivated” because it is hard for you to do basic tasks, such as washing your dishes or taking a shower. It feels impossible not to shame yourself for being able to do these seemingly basic tasks but you just don’t have the energy.

Want to Know More About How Depression Treatment Can Support You?

If you're struggling with feelings of sadness or hopelessness, you might be wondering whether you're experiencing depression or just going through a tough time. It’s important to understand the difference and know when it's time to seek help. Below, we answer some common questions about depression and how therapy can support you in feeling better.

  • Feeling sad sometimes is a normal part of life, especially when you're going through tough situations. However, depression is different from regular sadness. If you’re feeling hopeless, tired all the time, or uninterested in things you used to enjoy for weeks or even months, it could be depression. Depression also often brings physical symptoms, like changes in appetite, trouble sleeping, or difficulty concentrating. If you're unsure whether it's depression or just a temporary feeling, talking to a therapist can help you figure it out and decide on the best way forward.

  • Depression may not go away on its own, but it can get better with the right help. With treatment like therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes, many people start to feel better and manage their depression more effectively. Sometimes, depression can come and go, but ongoing support from a therapist can help you keep it under control. While some people experience long-term relief, others may need to continue treatment for a longer time to prevent it from returning.

  • Yes, therapy is one of the most effective ways to treat depression. It can help you understand the root causes of your depression, like negative thought patterns or past experiences, and provide tools to cope with your feelings in healthy ways. Therapy gives you a safe space to talk about your emotions without judgment, and over time, it can help you feel more in control of your thoughts and moods. Many people experience a significant improvement in their mental health after just a few months of therapy, and some even feel relief within weeks.

  • Therapy for depression typically involves regular sessions where you talk with a therapist about your feelings, thoughts, and daily experiences. Your therapist will help you identify negative thinking patterns that might be contributing to your depression and teach you strategies to change them. You might also explore past events or stressors that could be affecting your mood. Throughout this process, your therapist will work with you at your pace to help you feel better.

  • Therapy for depression is a good option when your feelings of sadness or hopelessness are interfering with your daily life. If you’re finding it hard to go to work, school, or take care of yourself because of your mood, therapy can help. It’s also a good time for therapy if you feel like you’ve tried to manage your depression on your own but things aren’t getting better, or if you’re noticing physical symptoms, like changes in your sleep or appetite. Therapy can help you understand what’s causing your depression and teach you ways to manage it so you can start feeling more like yourself again.
